Lyrics

When I was seventeen
I thought that I knew everything
There was this place in town
I used to hang around
to get off of the street
Leroy and Red ran this home
for the poor and young
disenchanted ones
we put our all in one pot
and we drank from it together
every night

In the living room
by the candlelight
we'd sit on the floor and dream
of other times gone by
and places far away
and how things weren’t what
they seemed

Leroy would read from his book
and Red would play the piano
Then the guitars would come out
and we'd sing and dance
and laugh and shout

Goodbye mom, I gotta go out
all my friends are down at
Newlin House
I might be chasing a cloud
I don't really know
It's not the school
you had in mind
but it's what I want
and everything is fine
It might be the beginning
by the end I will know
by the end I will know

I still dream of the rooms
and the hallways and doors
and the porch with the
wooden chair
In the kitchen
sisters making dinner now
and I try hard not to stare

That was so long ago
but I remember it like it was
yesterday
Goes to show
you never really know
what you have today
is all you need anyway

Goodbye mom, I gotta go out
all my friends are down at
Newlin House
I might be chasing a cloud
I don't really know
It's not the school
you had in mind
but it's what I want
and everything is fine
It might be the beginning
by the end I will know
by the end I will know

It’s just the beginning
By the end I will know
